My Film of 2010

Sofia Coppola's Somewhere

Documenting a handful of days in California's Chateau Marmont, Somewhere focuses on a trashy Hollywood star and his daughter, surrounded by strippers and Guitar Hero, singing butlers and Kanken backpacks.
It is not a poor man's Lost In Translation, Coppola's other ode to being lost in a hotel. Where LiT was a dark, cold, neon lit love story, Somewhere exists as its dreamy, sunny sister. Though there is a menacing undercurrent; Phoenix's score drones away as star Johnny stalks the streets of Hollywood; the growls of his engine menacing the blonde he drives after through winding streets; his daughter spins around in the car to warn him of approaching paparazzi. I found these scenes genuinely tense, because I cared for the two characters - I didn't want anything bad happening to them. And compared to the rest of the idyllic scenes (cooking eggs Benedict, eating burgers and making fun of passersby, fooling around in the pool), these scenes jarred.
I saw Somewhere on my 25th birthday, alone but for another 3 or 4 people in the cinema. It was a lovely way to spend 2 hours.
