My Album of 2010

Shea Seger - Shea Seger

Shea Seger's debut, 10 years ago, was full of bombast and beats, shimmering string sections, hand claps, drawling guitars; a slice of Americana - Vietnam war vets and rainbows and whiskey bars. But that was 10 years ago.
During those ten years Shea had grown disillusioned with the music industry, she fell in love, gave birth to a daughter and moved to Texas. The plan was to help her father through a short period of physical rehab after an operation. What was meant to be weeks turned to years.
I had kept my eye on Shea. I can still sing along to her debut album, and it fast became a summer sun-bathe soundtrack must have. But internet searches didn't provide much information about what she was up to, where she was, what she was singing.
Then she suddenly returned. This year, after a quick internet search, there she was; releasing new material on an independent label, digitally, and quickly. I couldn't believe my luck.
Shea Seger, the album, is a bittersweet document of years of hardship, of anger and helplessness, of asking for help very very quietly, of disillusionment with politics and justice and fate. And there's love, and hope, and the celebration of being challenged, and remaining strong, and continuing singing.
